For the very first time these stories by Tolstoy were published in French in 1936 by Gallimard. They were illustrated then by a Russian artist living in France named Nathalie Parain (born Chelpanova, 1897–1958). Till recently her name was not well-known in her native country. Our book brings the works of this wonderful illustrator back to Russia.
